A 30-year-old unemployed man, Isaac Elegbede, who allegedly
beat his 60-year-old landlady, was on Thursday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’
Court.
The accused, who resides at 45, Orile Agege Road, Agege, a
suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of causing breach of peace and
assault.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Rachael Williams,
the accused committed the offences on July 17 at the accused’s apartment.
Williams alleged that the accused assaulted his landlady,
Mrs Jumoke Durashola, during an argument over electricity bills.
“The accused beat the 60-year-old woman and she became
unconscious in the process.
“If not for the intervention of other tenants, it would have
been another story,’’ she said.
The offences contravened Sections 168 and 173 of the
Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Assault and breach of peace carry a minimum of one year
imprisonment.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mrs L. Y. Balogun granted the accused a bail
of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Aug. 14 for mention.
It was easy for him to beat up an elderly woman because he no doubt beats his own mother.
He will suffer in life.
