This might be great news to people who are addicted to drinks as they have another reason to enjoy their drink. According to a new study, drinking alcohol helps in protection of heart from damage.
A team of scientists at the University of Sao Paulo’s Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) has proved that moderate drinking is actually helpful in protection of heart.
The study claims that the cardio protective mechanism is connected to the ALDH2 (aldehyde dehydrogenase-2) activation. It’s an enzyme that breaks down that breaks down the toxic parts of alcohol and at the same time, protect the heart when it suffers a major damage, such as when a heart attack occurs.
Julio Cesar Batista Ferreira, a professor in ICU-USP’s Anatomy Department and the study’s lead author, said:
“Our data suggest moderate exposure to ethanol causes minor stress in heart cells but not enough to kill them. Intracellular signalling is reorganised as a result, and heart cells eventually create a biochemical memory to protect against stress, also known as preconditioning.”
The researchers note, however, that exposing the heart to low levels of alcohol will effectively train the body to produce the protective enzymes, to cope with a heart attack. Therefore, the experts think it’s better to have a heart that’s prepared for damage than the heart of a person who does not drink alcohol.
They also warn that excessive drinking can be dangerous and have an opposite effect. The researchers worked on mice models, where some were some were exposed to alcohol while another group was not. The team then interrupted the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart for about 30 minutes, just as what happened during a heart attack.
It was observed that the mice whose hearts were exposed to alcohol had lesser damage, when compared to another group.
Indeed, those unexposed to alcohol had damage to about 50 percent of their heart cells. On the other hand, only 30 percent of the heart cells of those exposed to alcohol had died.
According to WHO (World Health Organisation), moderate drinking is described as drinking about two cans of beer or two glasses of wine.
